Prosecco: History and Etymology of an Italian Icon
The name Prosecco immediately evokes the image of light bubbles and joyful toasts, but behind this much-loved wine lies an ancient and fascinating history, which has its roots in the heart of North-East Italy.

The Origins: between Rome and Friuli
The first historical traces of Prosecco date back to Roman times. It is believed that the ancestor wine of today’s Prosecco was the famous “vinum Pucinum”, praised even by Pliny the Elder for its healthy qualities. This wine was produced along the Adriatic coast, particularly in the area of the Trieste Karst, and is thought to have been obtained from a grape variety similar to today’s Glera.

From Prosecco (Trieste) to the Hills of Veneto
The etymology of the name “Prosecco” probably derives from the small village of the same name near Trieste, which in ancient times was called “Castello di Prosecco“. This is where the grape variety got its name, even before the wine became famous. For centuries, the term “Prosecco” indicated the wine produced with grapes grown in that area.
From Grape Variety to Denomination
The main grape variety of Prosecco is now called Glera, a name made official in 2009 to clearly distinguish the grape variety from the denomination. This change was important to protect the identity of Prosecco and guarantee the authenticity of the product. Over time, Prosecco has obtained the DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) and DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) certifications, becoming one of the most exported and recognized Italian sparkling wines in the world.
